Foundations and Development
For the LA 289 winter studio, students were tasked with redesigning the Lawrence Hall courtyard on campus into a space for educational experiences, meeting spaces, and inspiration. Upon analyzing the site, I defined aspects of
the courtyard that would work well with creating these spaces.
the courtyard that would work well with creating these spaces.
One aspect I identified in the space was the way the sound traveled. The site had beautiful acoustics and I knew I wanted to work with that in my design. In order to create an event space, I observed the larger areas in the courtyard and their view sheds. I identified the area outside the Hayden Gallery as an event space, as it is where people can see the most of the courtyard.

For the final design, I wanted to create a space that flourished with creativity. I focused on having multiple artistic spaces to inspire students such as a central stage, a sculpture garden and a print making gallery outside the print making studio. Additionally, there were many educational spaces such as the outdoor studio space in the covered area as well as a greenhouse over the awning on the north side. I also added many gathering spaces, benches and lights in order to make the space more welcoming and refreshing to spend time in. Lastly, I added a fountain in the middle to fill the space with sound.
Model Photos
The model of my redesign most accurately represents how people experience the space. It highlights the various gathering spaces such as the fountain area, event space, and the area surrounding the large tree. It also displays the other educational and inspirational aspects of the design such as the outdoor studio, second floor greenhouse, and the central stage.
