“Keep It Clean” - Runoff Waterfalls
For the LA 289 spring studio, students were asked to identify a specific environmental concept that had relevance at the UO Riverfront Property. For this project, we were grouped into pairs. My partner, Noah Reveles, and I chose to focus on water quality in the millrace. We identified the riparian zone of the millrace as a potential educational opportunity and conceptualized runoff waterfalls for one of our installations.

The runoff waterfalls signify two sides of society, nature and the anthropocene. On one side of the installation, there is a healthy riparian zone full of plants and rocks. On the other side, there is a polluted riparian zone containing trash, manure, and other water pollutants. At the bottom of each waterfall, there are water catchers which are used to observe the quality of the water. This installation aims to educate the public on the dangers of pollution and waste to our water. It would hopefully inspire people who interact with it to do what they can to reduce their own personal waste as well as the waste created by corporations they support.

“Do It For The Mill” - Oil Rings
Moving forward, Noah and I wanted to focus on collecting waste that made its way into the Millrace as a commentary to the city of Eugene’s treatment of the Millrace. We researched different forms of waste that go into the millrace, and we found that there was a significant amount of oil and rubber that makes its way into the Millrace from Franklin BLVD. We wanted to highlight that with our oil ring waste catchers.

For this design, we created trash and waste catchers to be placed in the Millrace. These catchers resemble the shapes and colors of oil as it invades water. The rings are placed throughout the millrace, and they are best viewed when you are on the bike path because of the lookout on the side. This design serves as eye candy with the bright colors, but it also brings light to the effects that the city of Eugene has on water quality. They would float on the surface of the water, collecting floating waste in the millrace and would be emptied out once they pile up. This will force community members to confront their wastefulness.
